Two coefficient identification problems (CIP) for a system of one-dimensional advection-reaction equations in water quality modeling are considered. The first CIP uses one full boundary measurement while the second one uses incomplete internal measurements. The advection-reaction equations are used to describe the transportation of pollutants in rivers or streams. Stability for the first CIP is proved using global Carleman estimates. The CIPs are solved using the least-squares approach accompanied with the adjoint equation technique for computing the Fr\'echet derivatives of the objective functionals. Similar problems for source identification problems are also considered when coefficients of the model are known in advance. Numerical tests are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithms. (In collaboration with Nguyen Trung Thanh, Nguyen Van Duc, Pham Quy Muoi, and Nguyen Van Thang)
